33rd Rising Day of Railway Protection Force, Southern Railway was celebrated on 20th September, 2018 at the RPF Parade Grounds, Ayanavaram, Chennai .
On this august occasion, Shri. R.K Kulshrestha , General Manager, Southern Railway presided over the function and received the Guard of Honour from the RPF Contingents. Addressing the RPF contingent, General Manager stated that passengers have great expectations from RPF and that they should respond to the new challenges with renewed vigour and determination setting high standards of excellence in work.

Birendra Kumar, IG – cum – Principle Chief Security Commissioner highlighted the various initiatives of the RPF wing of Southern Railway in ensuring safe and secure travel for rail passengers.The event was well attended by other Senior Railway Officialsand staff of Southern Railway. RPF Rising Day is organised every year on 20thSeptember to commemorate the conferring of‘Armed Force of the Union’ status to the Railway Protection Force (RPF). Several passenger awareness programmes, blood donation/medical camps, tree plantation were held all over Southern Railway to celebrate the RPF Rising Day in a befitting manner.
Achievements of RPF, Southern Railway ( January-August, 2018)
·315 trains are being escorted daily by RPF personnel in Southern Railway.
·Stolen Railway Properties worth Rs. 7.584 lakhs (upto August, 2018) was recovered during the year.
·A total number of 59,965 offenders were prosecuted and fine amount of Rs. 1.88 Crores was collected.
·The year 2018, being declared as the year of Women Safety, the lady RPF constables are utilized as “Shakthi Padai” for providing security to women passengers.
·In Southern Railway 175 women RPF personnel have been exclusively deputed for the safety and security of women and children.
·RPF personnel have been rendering yeomen service in retrieving abandoned/left over passenger belongings containing cash, jewels, vital documents etc., and returning to the lawful owners in 1840occasions during the current year.
·359 cases have been detected with the arrest of 277 accused and recovery of property worth Rs. 6, 37,178 was made.
·“Child Help Desks” have been established in Chennai Central and Egmore and 893 children have been rescued upto August this year.
·The twitter handle and Security Helpline No. 182 is functional round the clock providing security related assistance to passengers in distress. A total of 457 complaints have been promptly dealt in 2018.
·12 Dog Kennels have been established in the six divisions and 25 Dogs are being deployed in the stations for better security.
·To prevent the loss of precious life and limbs due to footboard travelling and trespassing, the RPF has launched awareness programmes at all important and major stations for safe travel in trains.
·To sensitize public about the dangers of foot board travelling in trains,during this year, 8052 persons have been prosecuted and a fine amount of Rs.22,87,850/-has been realized.
·RPF, Southern Railway has been actively involved in the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. In its bid to make Railway Premises litter free,defaulters found littering in Railway premises are penalized. During 2018 upto August, 52693 defaulters have been penalized and a fine amount of Rs.1,15,61,090/-has been realized.
·It is noteworthy that Sri.N.M.Mahesh Kumar, IPF/CIB/HQRS was conferred with the Prestigious Presidents Police Medal this year.
