The 58th Railway Week Celebrations of Southern Railway was celebrated today (12.04.2013) at Raja Annamalai Mandram, Chennai. Dr. E. Sreedharan, Principal Advisor, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
While delivering his address, Dr. E. Sreedharan, emphasized that Safety, Punctuality and Cleanliness of stations and trains should be the priorities of the railway fraternity. Before expecting co-operation from the passengers on this regard, stations and trains should be neatly maintained, he exhorted the railway men. He further said that enthusiasm in one’s work and contentment should count and not one’s position, salary or place of posting. He urged railwaymen to take pride in the fact that they are serving the society.
Speaking on the occasion, the General Manager said that Indian Railways is a vehicle of progress in the development of our great country and is aptly called the lifeline of the nation. He said that he was both proud and honoured with the presence of Dr. E. Sreedharan as the Chief Guest. The Railway fraternity can hardly have a better ‘Brand Ambassador’ than Dr. Sreedharan. He successfully pioneered the concept of metro services in our country at Delhi and has been instrumental in planning metros in several other cities including Cochin and Chennai. It is not for nothing that he is called ‘The Metro-man of India’, the General Manager added.
The General Manager laid emphasis on cleanliness at stations and in trains. He requested the general public to help railways in this cause. He said that the railway would not hesitate to impose heavy fines on the offenders. He reported that Southern Railway had earned Rs. 6036 crores which shows an overall growth of 7.7% over the actuals of the preceding year. on the expenditure front, we have had to accommodate an additional 180 cr. due to increment arrears, diesel price hike and Electricity Board tariff revision which were entirely post budgetary developments.
A record number of 128 unmanned level crossings have been eliminated from Southern Railway during the last Financial Year. The target for manning of 60 level crossings has been fully achieved during 2012-13.
Southern Railway is predominantly a passenger oriented Railway. In order to improve mobility of our esteemed passengers, 22 pairs of new trains were introduced and 13 pairs of trains were extended during the year. The frequency of 2 pairs of trains was also increased during the year.
Regarding summer specials, Southern Railway has already notified running of as many as 152 special trains during this summer. This notification has come out in newspapers nearly a month back. Upon further review of the position, we have discovered that it would be possible to run the following additional summer specials.
Chennai – Jodhpur – Bikaner – Jodhpur – Chennai – 20 services
Chennai – Tirunelveli – Chennai - 12 services
Nagercoil – Bangalore via Madurai - 10 services
Chennai – Palani - 10 services
In addition, on a daily basis all through the summer, everyday we will be attaching three extra coaches to trains going to Trivandrum, two extra coaches to Madurai, three to Tiruchchirappalli and three to Mangalore.
Southern Railway has been significantly contributing to its network expansion by way of construction of new lines, doubling and gauge conversion. Southern Railway has commissioned the following sections during 2012-13.
Dindigul – Palani (58 km),
Tirunelveli – Tenkasi (72 km),
Mayiladuthurai – Tiruvarur (38 km),
Maduranthakam – Melmaruvathur (11 km) and
Perani – Mundiyambakkam ( 13 km)
Passenger services have been introduced already in the above-mentioned sections.
In addition, Salem – Karur new line has already been inspected and authorized by Commissioner of Railway Safety, and the line has already been opened for freight traffic. Furthermore, Manamadurai – Virudunagar (67 km), Palani – Pollachi (63 km), Chengalpattu – Ottivakam (9 km), Melmaruvathur – Tozhupedu (9km), Tindivanam – Perani (17 km) and Ennore – Attippattu (3rd and 4thlines) are ready for CRS inspection and commissioning.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the proud possessions of Southern Railway. Golden Rock workshop had manufactured two steam locomotives from scratch and both these locos are running very successfully in Nilgiri Mountains. The recently built 3rd X class steam locomotive for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is undergoing trials and will be introduced in service shortly. It is noteworthy that Goldenrock Workshops has made these locos at a cost of Rs. 5 crores each (approx.) compared to Rs.25 crores quoted by firms in the global tender.
Our Railway Protection Force has been shouldering additional responsibility of security of traveling passengers apart from protecting and safeguarding the railway property. Southern Railway is the pioneer in implanting Integrated Security Scheme in Indian Railways. In all, 14 stations in Southern Railway will be covered under an elaborate surveillance system. This scheme has already been completed at 8 stations and the remaining stations will get covered by Integrated Security Scheme during the current Financial Year.
Shri. N. Swaminathan, Chief Personnel Officer, Southern Railway welcomed the gathering. 33 Efficiency shields, 22 group awards and 126 individual awards were presented. Palakkad division bagged the GM’s Inter Divisional overall Efficiency Shield while Salem division was the runner in the same category.
